This item was the only standard issue communicator in service from Starfleet's logo re-design 2371 to the late 2380's-90's. Being worn on the left breast of the individual's uniform, it transmitted information to the ships computer, about the wearer's vital signs, location, and could also serve as a distress beacon. This model communicator also boasted several other technical improvements and innovations over the previous model which made it more versatile, such as increased energy capacity.
